Cigna Acquires CarepathRx Pharmacy for Hospitals

Cigna has acquired CarepathRx, a major pharmacy that dispenses prescription drugs to nearly 10% of U.S. hospitals. The target is described as being backed by private equity.

The acquisition extends Cigna’s push into prescription drugs, building on its prior Express Scripts acquisition in 2018 for $54 billion. The move is framed as part of “vertical integration,” where insurers expand beyond health insurance into downstream pharmacy control.
