How to become a GTM engineer: skills, projects and where to find jobs

Researched by the Tentt team · draft awaiting expert review · Updated

How to become a GTM engineer: learn CRM fundamentals, Clay, APIs, basic SQL, an automation tool such as n8n or Make, Claude Code and email deliverability, then prove it with portfolio projects. Bloomberry found employers ask for 4.11 years of experience on average, and most GTM engineers start in SDR or RevOps roles.

Key takeaways

  • Bloomberry's review of 100 GTM engineer LinkedIn profiles found the most common route into the role was from SDR or BDR work, followed by RevOps or sales operations.
  • GTM engineering job posts asked for an average of 4.11 years of experience in Bloomberry's analysis, so most people move into the role from an adjacent job rather than starting in it.
  • SQL and Python each appeared in 38% of GTM engineer postings in Bloomberry's analysis, which makes basic coding one of the clearest ways to stand out.
  • Free or low-cost learning sources exist for each core skill, including Clay University, n8n's N8N101 to N8N103 courses, HubSpot Academy and Anthropic's Claude Code courses.
  • A portfolio of two or three working systems, documented with what they produced, is stronger evidence for a GTM engineer role than a certificate.

How to become a GTM engineer: where do most people start?

Most people become a GTM engineer by moving sideways from a sales, operations or growth job, not by applying straight from university. Bloomberry reviewed 100 GTM engineer LinkedIn profiles and identified five routes into the go-to-market (GTM) engineering role, from most to least common.

RouteWhat the move looks likeHow common (Bloomberry)
SDR or BDRBuilds automation to cut manual prospecting, then moves into building full timeMost common
RevOps or sales opsMoves from CRM admin and reporting into workflow automation and AISecond most common
Early-stage generalistCovers many functions at a startup and formalises into the roleNot ranked
Marketing or growthMoves into data-heavy, systems-focused workLess common but growing
Technical backgroundMoves from software, data or development into revenue systemsRarest

Bloomberry found Clay in more than 90% of those profiles, which tells you which tool to learn first. The same analysis found postings asked for 4.11 years of experience on average, so the realistic plan is to build GTM engineering skills inside your current job and make the switch once you have results to show.

Which skills should you learn first?

Learn the skills in the order you will use them in a real build: understand the data model first, then the tools that move data, then the code and AI that extend them. This sequence covers what job posts ask for:

  1. CRM fundamentals: objects, fields, pipelines and how HubSpot or Attio store accounts, contacts and deals.
  2. Clay: tables, enrichment, waterfalls across providers and AI research columns.
  3. APIs and HTTP: reading API docs, authentication, JSON, webhooks and making requests from Clay or n8n.
  4. SQL basics: selecting, filtering, joining and grouping data.
  5. Automation: n8n or Make for connecting tools, scheduling jobs and handling errors.
  6. AI coding: using Claude Code to write and run scripts, scrapers and small integrations.

SQL and Python each appeared in 38% of GTM engineer postings in Bloomberry's analysis. Onfire, a vendor, found 56% of the 209 postings it reviewed in 2026 asked for working SQL, Python or JavaScript.

AI coding tools make the code easier to write, but you still need enough understanding to read it, test it and spot when it is wrong. Deliverability sits alongside all six, and it has its own section below because mistakes there are expensive.

Why does email deliverability belong on the list?

Email deliverability belongs on the list because a GTM engineer's outbound system is worthless if its emails land in spam. Since February 2024, Google and Yahoo have enforced sender requirements that every outbound builder needs to understand.

Google's guidelines require all senders to set up SPF or DKIM, use TLS and keep the spam rate reported in Postmaster Tools below 0.3%, with a stricter target of below 0.1%. Senders of more than 5,000 messages a day to Gmail must set up SPF, DKIM and DMARC, align the From domain and support one-click unsubscribe for marketing messages.

Yahoo's rules for bulk senders are similar: SPF and DKIM, a DMARC policy of at least p=none, a spam rate below 0.3%, a one-click List-Unsubscribe header and unsubscribes processed within 2 days. Learn to read DNS records, set up a sending domain and monitor bounce and spam rates, and you will avoid the most common failure in new outbound systems.

The cold email deliverability guide covers mailbox setup, warmup and sending limits in more depth.

Tentt's newsletter also lists 10 free GitHub repos for GTM engineering, which are useful for seeing how working systems are structured. Reading real code and real tables teaches faster than watching another overview video.

What should go in a GTM engineer portfolio?

A GTM engineer portfolio should show two or three working systems, each with the problem, the build and what it produced. Hiring managers want proof that you can ship something that runs, so a short write-up with screenshots or a video walkthrough beats a list of tools.

Projects that map directly to the work in job posts include:

  • A total addressable market build: source every company matching an ideal customer profile and enrich the key contacts.
  • A waterfall enrichment table that tries several email providers and records match rate and cost per contact.
  • A signal-triggered sequence that enrols contacts when a company hires for a role or raises funding.
  • An inbound router that researches each form fill and assigns it in the CRM within minutes.
  • A Claude Code script that scrapes a niche directory and writes clean rows into a spreadsheet or CRM.

Use real numbers from your own builds, such as rows processed, match rates or credits spent, and say honestly what did not work. If you build for a friend's company or a non-profit, ask permission before you share any data.

Where are GTM engineer jobs posted?

GTM engineer jobs are posted mainly on LinkedIn, in Clay's community and on general job boards. Onfire's 2026 vendor analysis found most GTM engineer postings appear on LinkedIn rather than Indeed, so set a LinkedIn job alert for "GTM engineer" and "go-to-market engineer" first.

The Clay community has a Share Jobs channel whose stated purpose is to post Clay or GTM engineering jobs, and recent posts in October 2026 included GTM engineer roles at several startups. General boards also carry the title: a SimplyHired UK search on 17 October 2026 returned 12 relevant roles, mostly in London.

Agencies are another route in. Kyle Poyar cited an estimate in September 2025 that 45% of people with the GTM engineer title worked at agencies or consultancies, and Clay's Solutions Partner directory listed more than 120 agencies. Agency work exposes you to many stacks quickly, which builds a portfolio faster than one in-house role.

What is a realistic GTM engineer career path?

A realistic GTM engineer career path runs from an adjacent role, through a first GTM engineer job, to senior, staff or founding roles that own the whole revenue stack. Cargo's vendor analysis of 509 US postings in 2026 found median pay of $155,000 at mid-level, $175,000 at senior and $219,000 at staff level, which shows how the ladder is forming.

The jump that matters most is from operating tools to designing systems. A Clay community analysis from November 2025 described the split as "tool operators" versus "system architects", with architects paid more, although its methodology is not published.

Longer term, GTM engineers move into heads of growth or RevOps, GTM leadership, or start their own agencies. The role is young, so the senior end of the ladder is still being defined.

How to become a GTM engineer in 2026: the short version

Start from the job you have, learn CRM data, Clay, APIs, SQL, an automation tool, Claude Code and deliverability, and build two or three systems you can show. Employers asked for 4.11 years of experience on average in Bloomberry's data, so results from adjacent roles count. Apply where the roles are actually posted: LinkedIn, the Clay community and agencies.

Expect the first build to take longer than the tutorials suggest, and document each one as you go. For a head start on how to become a GTM engineer, the free Tentt newsletter shares the GTM stack repos and the spec-driven GTM engineering deck, both drawn from real system work.

GTM engineering questions people ask

Can you become a GTM engineer without coding?

Yes, but it limits the roles you can get. Much GTM engineering work happens in no-code tools like Clay, n8n and Make, yet Bloomberry found SQL and Python each in 38% of postings and says the highest-paying roles expect you to write code. AI coding tools such as Claude Code have lowered the barrier to learning.

Do you need a degree to become a GTM engineer?

No degree is typically required. Bloomberry's review of GTM engineer LinkedIn profiles found the most common background was SDR or BDR work, followed by RevOps, while a technical background was the rarest route. Employers look for evidence of systems you have built.

Is there a GTM engineer certification?

Clay University has offered certifications, but as of October 2026 its site says new certification submissions are paused while a new version is built, and existing certifications remain valid. HubSpot Academy offers free certifications for HubSpot skills. A portfolio of working systems is still the strongest proof of skill.

How long does it take to learn Clay?

Clay University's Clay 101 cohort is described as a one-week, instructor-led sprint, which covers the basics. Becoming fluent with waterfalls, AI research columns and API calls takes longer and comes from building real tables. There is no published study of how long it takes on average.

Is GTM engineering a good career move for an SDR?

For many SDRs it is the most natural next step. Bloomberry found the SDR or BDR route was the most common path into GTM engineering, and its analysis put the median posted salary at $127,500. The move works best if you have already automated parts of your own prospecting.
